Irish music to play in park

A 10-hour Irish music and cultural festival will fill the Ed Kelly Amphitheater at Pennypack Park on Saturday as thousands of patrons are expected to attend the inaugural Philadelphia Fleadh.

“Fleadh” is the Irish Gaelic term for “festival.” The Philadelphia Fleadh will fit the bill with four themed stages, 10 musical acts, seven DJs, traditional Irish dancers, vendors, food, spirits and a kids’ zone. Presented by American Paddy Productions, the event is expected to be the largest of its kind in the city and will help raise money for the Philadelphia FOP Survivors Fund, which supports the families of slain police officers.

The lineup features many of the top Celtic Rock acts in the region, including The Young Dubliners, Jamison Celtic Rock, Blackthorn, Bogside Rogues, Clancy’s Pistol and Galway Guild. There will be workshops for more traditional musicians with sessions by Seamus Kelleher, Ray Coleman and The John Byrne Band. Visitors can also see performances by local Irish dance schools or take part in a beginners’ step-dance workshop.

The Ed Kelly Amphitheater is commonly known as the “Band Shell” and is accessible via the park entrance at Welsh Road and Cresco Avenue. Advance tickets cost $20 and are available via www.PhillyIrishFest.com. Tickets cost $30 at the gate. Admission is free for kids under 12. ••
